Kruger National Park: First Hand Experience of Poaching

Monday 24 August 09, Neil, owner of Dreamfields Guesthouse was witness to an unfortunate lion that had been caught in a poacher’s snare:

I arrived at a lion sighting to find that one of the 2 male lions had been caught around the neck in a snare and obviously struggled to brake free, tightening the wire noose so it cut into the lion’s neck. One of the Field guides at the sight had already notified the Kruger Park authorities and was on their way. (The injury was caused by illegal human activity and not nature so the authorities have an obligation to help). The vet arrived and darted the lion and then tracked it 150m into the bush where they found the sleeping beast. Unfortunately they were not able to carry the lion to the road and so asked for assistance from myself and the other guide present. We (7 of us) carried the sleeping giant to the road where the vet removed the snare and treated the wound. I was glad I could do my bit for conservation, and hopefully the lion will recover.
The lion was not the intended target but was unlucky to fall foul of a trap probably set for antelope or pig.

It is an unfortunate reality that poaching is still rife in the area, as fences are all too easily breached in order for poachers to operate.

Kruger National Park Videos

Many thanks to Kristinas (owner and manager of Dreamfields Guesthouse) God son Nicolas! On his birthday Kristina, he and his family went on a safari to the Kruger National Park and had a lovely day with very good sightings. It was the first time he used a video camera and look what he made out of it:

Golf holiday: Golf in Hazyview

There is a good choice of golf courses in and around Hazyview - one of many things to do:

Sabi River Bungalows is a 18-hole golf course. Trees and water both play important roles as hazards on this course. At least 14 holes have water hazards. There are five dams and they all play a role.

Kruger Park Lodge: This 9-hole golf course is a product of the Gary Player Design Company. It offers a refreshing balance between challenge and playability.

Both are beautiful courses with indigenous trees and you often see crocodiles, hippos and lots of birds.

The Skukuza Golf Course is a magnificent 9-hole (18-tee) course situated in the world-renowned Kruger National Park on the outskirts of Skukuza restcamp. The rich wildlife sanctuary surrounding the golf course is home to the Big Five, a huge variety of birds and countless animals, which all conspire to provide the visitor with a harmonious close-to-nature golfing experience.

Hazyview Elephant interaction

This photo cannot express the dimension: It is really impressive to touch, feel, feed and walk “hand in trunk” with such a giant! It is a unique and rewarding experience and one of the outstanding activities here in Hazyview!

FIFA World Cup 2010: FIFA World Cup™ Accommodation

We think it is understandable that the 2010 World Cup is one of the main topics on our blogs. It is such a big event and it causes so many discussions.
One of the big issues is the increase of prices by some (many) accommodation establishment (see South Africa Tripadvisor Forum).

Dreamfields Guesthouse is going to increase the prices in November 2009 by 14% (double) and 15% (single) for 2010 which is the standard yearly increase.
There will be no further increases during the World Cup but we will offer reduced rates from January to May!
However, during that period we do not offer single rates and we have different payment and cancellation policies:
World Cup 2010 bookings that are placed on/before 04.12.2009: a non-refundable deposit of 50% is requested. The full payment will be due by the 05.12.2009.
World Cup 2010 bookings placed on/after 05.12.2009: a non-refundable deposit of 100% is applicable.
Cancellation: All deposit or payments are non-refundable
